If you purchase an energy-efficient product or renewable energy system for your home, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit.
Which products are eligible for a tax credits for energy efficient home improvements? Are they available for new construction also? What about vacation homes? Rental properties?
Tax credits are available at 10% of the cost, up to $500 total, in 2011 (ONLY for existing homes, NOT new construction, that are your "principal residence") for:
- Windows and Doors (including sliding glass doors, garage doors, storm doors and storm windows)
- Insulation
- Roofs
- HVAC
- Water Heaters
Tax credits are available at 10% of the cost, with no upper limit, through 2011 (for existing homes & new construction - it does not have to be your "principal residence," vacation homes are eligible. Renters are not eligible for any of the tax credits.

From January 1, 2011 - December 31, 2011 windows (and doors and skylights) must have a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30. You do not have to replace all the windows/doors/skylights in your home to qualify. And it doesn't need to be a replacement either - installing a new window where there wasn't one previously (like in an addition) would qualify. |
